Pre-med GPA rules that affect your numbers

  • AMCAS and TMDSAS use BCPM, while AACOMAS uses BCP and excludes math from science GPA.
  • Quarter-hour coursework is converted to semester hours using x 0.667.
  • Repeated science courses are counted as separate attempts in all three service modes.
  • TMDSAS strips plus and minus grades to the base letter before calculating GPA.

About This Pre-Med GPA Calculator

This pre-med GPA calculator is built for students applying to medical school through AMCAS, AACOMAS, and TMDSAS. It separates science GPA from AO and total GPA using the service distinctions that matter most, such as math inclusion in BCPM, math exclusion in AACOMAS BCP, and TMDSAS handling of plus and minus grades. It also supports quarter-hour conversion and repeated-attempt counting so you can estimate the standardized GPA medical school admissions teams will actually review.

How to Use the Pre-Med GPA Calculator

Follow these steps for an accurate Pre-Med GPA result

1Choose AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS Mode

Start by selecting the application service you want to mirror. AMCAS and TMDSAS use BCPM, while AACOMAS uses BCP and excludes math from the science GPA.

2Enter Every Graded Course Attempt

Add each graded college course you want reviewed. This allows you to estimate the science, AO, and total GPA numbers medical school application services will standardize from your transcript.

3Classify Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, and AO

Assign each course to Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or AO. The calculator uses that classification to split science coursework from all other coursework.

4Convert Quarter Hours Automatically

If a course was taken on a quarter system, switch the row to Quarter units. The calculator converts quarter hours into semester hours using the standard 0.667 factor.

5Keep Repeated Attempts in the Calculation

Pre-med service-style calculations generally count both the original and repeated attempt instead of replacing the earlier grade. That can materially change your science GPA estimate.

6Compare Science, AO, and Total GPA

Use the summary cards to compare science GPA, AO GPA, and overall GPA so you can see whether your application is being driven more by your core sciences or by non-science coursework.

Pre-Med GPA Grade Conversion Scale

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 service-style grade scale, with TMDSAS removing plus and minus modifiers.

Pre-Med GPA Types Explained

Science GPA

In AMCAS and TMDSAS mode this is BCPM GPA, which includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. In AACOMAS mode it becomes BCP GPA and excludes math.

AO GPA

AO means all other coursework outside the science bucket used by the selected service. This is the main non-science GPA reference in pre-med planning.

Total GPA

Total GPA includes every graded course you enter. Admissions committees see this alongside science and non-science breakdowns, not as a replacement for them.

Service Differences

AMCAS and TMDSAS include math in science GPA, AACOMAS does not, and TMDSAS strips plus and minus grades. Those differences can change both your science GPA and your total GPA.

How Pre-Med GPA Is Calculated

1The Formula

Science GPA = Σ (Science Credits × Grade Points)

Σ Science Credits

The same quality-point method is also used for AO GPA and total GPA. Quarter-hour classes are converted into semester hours first, and repeated attempts are generally kept in the calculation instead of replaced.

2Key Pre-Med GPA Rules

  • AMCAS and TMDSAS use BCPM, which includes math in science GPA.
  • AACOMAS uses BCP, which excludes math from science GPA.
  • TMDSAS removes plus and minus modifiers before calculating GPA.
  • Repeated courses still count in AMCAS, AACOMAS, and TMDSAS planning.
  • WF usually counts as F, while regular W and pass/fail are usually excluded.
  • All institutions are usually combined in centralized application GPA review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about calculating GPA at Pre-Med GPA Calculator

Pre-med GPA usually refers to the GPA breakdowns medical school application services calculate for applicants, especially science GPA, non-science GPA, and total GPA. The most important systems are AMCAS for M.D. schools, AACOMAS for D.O. schools, and TMDSAS for Texas medical schools.
