Non-science GPA rules that affect your numbers

  • AMCAS and TMDSAS treat math as science, but AACOMAS moves math into Non-BCP GPA.
  • Computer science, engineering, health sciences, and most psychology courses are non-science in application-service style review.
  • Quarter-hour coursework is converted to semester hours using x 0.667.
  • Repeated attempts are counted in AMCAS, AACOMAS, and TMDSAS planning.

About This Non-Science GPA Calculator

This non-science GPA calculator is built for pre-health applicants who need to isolate AO, Non-BCP, or Non-BCPM coursework from the rest of the transcript. It is especially useful when you want to understand how medical, dental, veterinary, PA, PT, pharmacy, and other health-professions systems may view your academic breadth outside the core sciences. It also handles the biggest service difference here: AACOMAS moves math into non-science GPA, while AMCAS and TMDSAS keep math in the science bucket.

How to Use the Non-Science GPA Calculator

Follow these steps for an accurate Non-Science GPA result

1Choose AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS Mode

Start by selecting the service mode you want to mirror. This matters because math stays in science for AMCAS and TMDSAS but moves into non-science for AACOMAS.

2Enter Every Graded Course Attempt

Add each graded college course you want reviewed so you can compare non-science GPA against science GPA and total GPA.

3Classify AO and Science Coursework

Assign each course to Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or a non-science AO category such as psychology, computer science, engineering, humanities, or health science.

4Convert Quarter Hours Automatically

If a course was taken on a quarter system, switch the row to Quarter units. The calculator converts quarter hours into semester hours using the standard 0.667 factor.

5Keep Both Attempts for Retaken Courses

AMCAS, AACOMAS, and TMDSAS style planning generally counts both the original and repeated attempt instead of replacing the lower grade.

6Compare Non-Science Against Science GPA

Use the summary cards to compare non-science GPA, science GPA, and overall GPA so you can see whether your transcript strength sits more in breadth or in the sciences.

Non-Science GPA Grade Conversion Scale

This calculator uses the standard 4.0 service-style grade scale, with TMDSAS removing plus and minus modifiers.

Non-Science GPA Types Explained

Non-Science GPA

This is AO GPA on AMCAS, Non-BCP GPA on AACOMAS, and Non-BCPM GPA on TMDSAS. It includes everything outside the science bucket used by the selected service.

Science GPA

Science GPA includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and sometimes Mathematics depending on the service. Comparing it against non-science GPA shows whether your transcript is stronger inside or outside the sciences.

Overall GPA

Overall GPA includes all graded coursework. It matters for total academic competitiveness but often hides whether weaker performance is coming from science or non-science subjects.

Service Differences

Math stays in science GPA for AMCAS and TMDSAS but moves into non-science GPA for AACOMAS. That single difference can noticeably change both your science and non-science GPA values.

How Non-Science GPA Is Calculated

1The Formula

Non-Science GPA = Σ (AO Credits × Grade Points)

Σ AO Credits

The same quality-point method is also used for science GPA and total GPA. Quarter-hour classes are converted into semester hours first, and repeated attempts are generally kept in the calculation instead of replaced.

2Key Non-Science GPA Rules

  • Computer science is not BCPM and usually counts as AO.
  • Engineering is not BCPM and usually counts as AO.
  • Health sciences are usually AO, even when they feel biologically related.
  • Math flips by service and becomes non-science in AACOMAS mode.
  • Quarter hours are converted into semester hours using 0.667.
  • Retakes still count in AMCAS, AACOMAS, and TMDSAS style review.
