About This Major GPA Calculator

This Major GPA Calculator is designed for students who need to isolate performance inside their declared major rather than across all coursework. It is useful for departmental honors, graduating with distinction in the major, scholarship review, graduate or professional program applications, and any situation where a school, employer, or advisor wants to see how you perform in your core field. It also converts quarter-hour coursework into semester hours and lets you separate courses that count toward the major from courses that do not, based on your degree audit or official major requirements.

How to Use the Major GPA Calculator

Follow these steps for an accurate Major GPA result

1Add Every Graded Course You Want Reviewed

Enter all graded coursework you want compared. This lets you isolate your major-only GPA while still seeing how it compares with your overall academic record.

2Mark Which Courses Count Toward the Major

Use the Count field on each row to decide whether the course should be included in Major GPA. Required major courses, concentration courses, and approved related-department classes usually count.

3Label the Course Type

Choose Core, Required Elective, Related Department, or Outside Major. The label helps you keep your list organized, especially when your degree audit includes courses from more than one department.

4Convert Quarter Hours Automatically

If a course uses quarter units, switch the row to Quarter. The calculator converts quarter hours into semester hours using the standard 0.667 factor before calculating GPA.

5Review Major and Non-Major Split

The result card shows your Major GPA first, then compares it with your Overall GPA and Non-Major GPA. That makes it easier to understand whether your strength is concentrated inside your major or outside it.

6Verify Against Your Degree Audit

Major GPA rules vary by institution. Some schools include all courses from the major department, while others count only courses officially listed in the degree audit. Use the calculator as a planning tool, then confirm with your academic advisor or registrar.

Major GPA Types Explained

Major GPA

Includes only the courses you mark as counting toward the major. This is the number most departments, advisors, and graduate programs mean when they ask for major GPA.

Overall GPA

Includes every graded course you enter, whether it counts toward the major or not. It helps you compare major performance with your full academic record.

Non-Major GPA

Includes the rows you exclude from the major. This can reveal whether your cumulative GPA is being lifted or dragged by classes outside your main field.

How Major GPA Is Calculated

Major GPA formula

Major GPA = Total quality points from major courses / Total attempted credits from major courses

Quality points = Grade points x course credits

In practice, that means each included course contributes based on both the grade earned and the number of credits attached to the course. A 4-credit core requirement has more effect on major GPA than a 1-credit seminar.

Institutional rules can still change the final official number. Some schools count all departmental classes, some count only degree-audit courses, and some replace repeated grades while others average them.

When to use Major GPA instead of cumulative GPA

Use Major GPA when the review is specifically about performance in your field of study, such as departmental distinction, graduate applications in the same subject, internship screening for your major, or scholarship review inside the department.

Use cumulative GPA when the review is about your full academic history across all subjects. Many schools and programs look at both, not just one.
