About This Graduate GPA Calculator
This graduate GPA calculator is designed for students who need to isolate performance in graduate-level coursework rather than combining it with undergraduate work. It is useful for master's and doctoral students, certificate programs, post-baccalaureate study, academic standing review, and advanced-degree applications where graduate GPA is evaluated separately. It also supports quarter-hour conversion and helps you separate true graduate credit from rows that should not count, such as undergraduate-level courses, pass/fail coursework, satisfactory-only research credits, or non-graded dissertation rows. At many schools, this means focusing on 500+ or 5000+ coursework only.
How to Use the Graduate GPA Calculator
Follow these steps for an accurate Graduate GPA result
1Enter Your Graduate-Level Courses
Add the graded courses that belong to your master's, doctoral, certificate, or other graduate-level transcript record.
2Separate Graduate and Undergraduate Work
Use the Count field to decide which rows should count toward Graduate GPA. This is useful when your record includes both graduate-level and undergraduate-level coursework.
3Label the Type of Graduate Coursework
Choose Graduate Core, Graduate Elective, Research/Seminar, or Undergraduate. The label helps keep your list organised when you are reviewing mixed coursework.
4Convert Quarter Hours Automatically
If a course was taken on a quarter system, switch the row to Quarter units. The calculator converts quarter hours to semester hours using the standard 0.667 factor.
5Compare Graduate and Overall GPA
The result card shows Graduate GPA first, then compares it with Overall GPA and Non-Graduate GPA. This helps you see whether your graduate academic performance is stronger or weaker than your broader transcript.
6Verify Your Institution’s Graduate Policy
Some graduate programs exclude pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, thesis-only, or extra-credit rows from GPA. Confirm the official policy if you need an exact institutional number.
Graduate GPA Grade Conversion Scale
This calculator uses the standard 4.0 letter-grade scale for graduate GPA planning.
Graduate GPA Types Explained
Graduate GPA
Includes only the courses you mark as graduate-level graded coursework. This is the number most schools mean when they ask for your graduate GPA separately from undergrad work.
Overall GPA
Includes every graded course you enter, whether it is graduate or not. It helps you compare graduate performance with your full transcript.
Non-Graduate GPA
Includes the rows you exclude from graduate GPA. This can reveal whether your overall GPA is being shaped more by undergraduate or other non-graduate coursework.
How Graduate GPA Is Calculated
Graduate GPA formula
Graduate GPA = Total quality points from graduate courses / Total attempted credits from graduate courses
Quality points = Grade points x course credits
In practice, each included graduate course contributes based on both the grade earned and the number of credits attached to the course. A 4-credit graduate statistics class has more effect on graduate GPA than a 1-credit seminar.
Institutional rules can still change the official number. Some schools exclude satisfactory/unsatisfactory rows, thesis-only credits, audit courses, extra-designated courses, or undergraduate classes taken during graduate enrollment. Others report a separate graduate GPA alongside a combined overall GPA that includes both undergraduate and graduate work.
Example GPA Calculation - Graduate GPA Calculator
See how GPA is computed step-by-step on the Standard 4.0 Graduate GPA Scale
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Research Methods | 3 | A | 4.00 | 12.00 |
| Advanced Statistics | 3 | A- | 3.67 | 11.01 |
| Seminar in Theory | 3 | B+ | 3.33 | 9.99 |
| Advanced Topics | 3 | B | 3.00 | 9.00 |
| Total | 12 | 42.00 |
Calculation
GPA = 42.00 ÷ 12 = 3.50
Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours = Cumulative GPA
When to use graduate GPA instead of cumulative GPA
Use graduate GPA when the review is focused on advanced-level academic work, such as master's or doctoral admissions, graduate academic standing, assistantship review, or advanced professional applications.
Use cumulative GPA when the review is about your entire academic history across all degree levels. Many schools and employers consider both together rather than relying on only one number.
