VMCAS rules that affect your numbers

  • All repeated courses count, and retakes are averaged rather than replaced.
  • All institutions attended are combined into cumulative GPA calculations.
  • Quarter-hour coursework is converted to semester hours using Γ— 0.667.
  • VMCAS does not use WF. Regular W is excluded and only F counts as 0.00.

About This VMCAS GPA Calculator

This VMCAS GPA calculator is built for veterinary school applicants and pre-vet students who need to estimate the GPA views commonly reviewed in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine admissions: overall GPA, cumulative undergraduate GPA, total GPA, science GPA, BCPM GPA, animal science GPA, prerequisite GPA, and last-45 GPA. It converts quarter-hour coursework into semester hours using the standard Veterinary Medical College Application Service approach, combines coursework across all institutions attended, and reflects the rule that repeated courses are averaged rather than replaced.

How to Use the VMCAS GPA Calculator

Follow these steps for an accurate VMCAS GPA result

1Enter Every Graded Course Attempt

Add every graded course from every college or university you attended. VMCAS includes repeated coursework, averages retakes rather than replacing them, and combines all institutions when it recalculates GPA from transcripts.

2Classify Veterinary Science Subjects

Choose Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Mathematics, Other Life Science, Other Science, or Non-Science for each course. Those categories determine your science GPA, BCPM GPA, and animal science GPA.

3Set Academic Level and Units

Mark each course as freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, post-bacc, graduate, or doctorate level, then choose semester or quarter credit. Quarter hours are converted to semester hours using the VMCAS 0.667 factor.

4Flag Veterinary Prerequisites and Last 45 Hours

Use the prerequisite toggle for vet school requirements like biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, and animal science. Use the last-45 toggle if you want to estimate the most recent 45 semester hours GPA some vet schools emphasize.

5Compare the Main VMCAS GPA Views

Review your overall GPA, cumulative undergraduate GPA, total GPA, science GPA, BCPM GPA, animal science GPA, prerequisite GPA, and last-45 GPA before you apply. Official verification can still differ if transcript classification changes.

VMCAS Grade Conversion Scale

VMCAS uses a standardized 4.0 grade scale for veterinary school applications, and only `F` counts as 0.00 because VMCAS does not use a WF category.

VMCAS GPA Types Explained

Overall GPA

Includes all graded coursework from all institutions after credit standardization to semester hours. This is the main cumulative VMCAS GPA most applicants check first.

Cumulative Undergraduate GPA

Includes freshman through post-bacc coursework while excluding graduate and doctorate work. This helps vet schools isolate your pre-D.V.M. academic base.

Total GPA

Includes freshman through senior coursework only. This reflects the traditional four-year undergraduate GPA before post-bacc or graduate work is added.

Science GPA

Includes Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Other Life Science, and Other Science coursework. This is one of the most important veterinary admissions GPA views and helps show readiness for the D.V.M. curriculum.

BCPM GPA

Includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics only. This gives veterinary programs a narrower core-science screening number similar to medical school BCPM.

Animal Science GPA

Includes animal-focused coursework like animal nutrition, animal physiology, animal behavior, and veterinary science. This helps show your veterinary-specific academic preparation.

Prerequisite GPA

Includes only the courses you flag as vet school prerequisites, which is useful because required biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, and animal science work can differ by program.

Last 45 GPA

Includes only the courses you mark as your most recent 45 semester hours. Some veterinary schools use this to evaluate recent academic performance and upward trend.

How VMCAS Calculates GPA

1The Formula

VMCAS GPA = Ξ£ (Semester-Standardized Credits Γ— Grade Points)

Ξ£ Semester-Standardized Credits

Quarter-hour classes are first converted into semester hours, then quality points are calculated and averaged across each VMCAS GPA bucket using the standardized semester-based method applied by AAVMC across all institutions attended.

2Key VMCAS Rules

  • β€’All attempts count, and repeated coursework is averaged rather than replaced.
  • β€’All institutions count, not just your current school.
  • β€’Quarter hours are converted into semester hours using 0.667 before GPA is computed.
  • β€’Pass/fail work is generally excluded, along with regular W grades and credit-by-exam entries without a letter grade.
  • β€’Academic forgiveness does not apply, so old grades still remain in the official VMCAS GPA.
  • β€’Spring 2020 pass/fail exceptions can exist, but most pass/fail work is still excluded from GPA.
  • β€’There is no WF category, so only F counts as 0.00 in VMCAS calculations.

These ranges are approximate planning references based on common veterinary admissions expectations and are not official program cutoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about calculating GPA at VMCAS

Most veterinary programs pay close attention to the overall GPA, science GPA, BCPM GPA, and prerequisite GPA, while animal science GPA and last-45 GPA can also matter. Those views help programs judge both your core science foundation and your veterinary-specific preparation.
